1931 James 2018

James Geditz

July 28, 1931 — July 5, 2018

James (Jimmy) Peter Geditz died peacefully, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, on July 5, 2018 in Aberdeen, SD, at the age of 86.

Jimmy was born on July 28th, 1931in Harmony Township – Edmunds County, to Peter and Josephine (Sindelar) Geditz. He graduated from Ipswich High School in 1949. He worked as a farmhand prior to serving in the Korean War in the United States Army from 1952-1954 as a radio operator. He was recognized for his service, receiving the Korean Ambassador Peace Medal.

After returning from the war, he married Marion Rosella Ehnes, in 1956. They started their lives together farming and he later worked for the City of Ipswich. The couple quit farming and moved to town in 1982. He became the janitor at Ipswich High School until his first retirement. Retirement didn’t suit him, so he returned to work for the city of Ipswich for several years. Over 17 years, the couple welcomed 10 children into their home.

James was a jack-of-all-trades and many throughout the years requested his expert opinion. He enjoyed going to wedding dances, playing the harmonica, gardening, baking and spending time with the family. You could find Jimmy cooking up a batch of “the recipe” for guests around the holiday season.

He was an active and dedicated member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Foresters and American Legion.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Marion (Ehnes) Geditz; children, Kathy (Dale) Miller of Roscoe, SD; Mike (Gwen) Geditz of Ipswich, SD; Larry (Cindy) Geditz of Ipswich, SD; Danny (Deanne) Geditz of Yankton, SD; Ricky (Dawn) Geditz of New Underwood, SD; Kevin (Cheri) Geditz of Gettysburg, SD; Peggy (Glenn) Gebur of Lily, SD; Greg (Brenda) Geditz of Ipswich, SD; Glen (Michelle) Geditz of Brandon, SD; Susie (Jeff) Berreth of Leola, SD; 29 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren; 7 brothers, Robert, Raymond (Karen), Bernard, Peter, Jerome (Pat), Fr. Roger, Gerald (Mary Kay); and 6 sisters, Delores (Bernard Thares, Judy (Marv) Seyer, Jeanne Bieber, Marie (Wayne) Enstice, Patty (Len) Schweitzer, and Susan Klang. He is preceded in death by his parents, 1 grandchild, 1 son-in-law, 4 sisters-in-law and 3 brothers-in-law.

Visitation will be Sunday July 8 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at the Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Liturgical Wake Service starting at 5:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 9 at 10:30 am at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich, S.D with lunch to follow the burial. Father Russell Homic will serve as Celebrant of the Mass.
